Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring

Welcome to day 1. Its Rite of Spring - don’t be scared!

For this task you need paper and art materials (lots of different colours). Place the paper (the bigger, the better) landscape (longest side top and bottom) on your table.

1.       Listen to the beginning of Rite of Spring (link below, stop at around 3’45). As you listen, close your eyes and imagine a beautiful sunny day. The sun is bright and high in the sky, you are in the countryside surrounded by nature. Each instrument of the orchestra represents a flower, animal, insect, leaf waking up on this beautiful day and bending up to face the first moments of spring sunshine

2.     Listen again and this time try to quickly draw a small flower, leaf, animal etc. for each instrument you hear. Do this in pencil to begin with. The musical ideas start to pile in on top of each other so you’ll have to sketch quickly to keep up. By the end of the 3 minutes your page should be full!

3.     When this is done, take some time to colour in your artwork. Listen again as you do this, perhaps stopping and starting the music. Can you choose colours that match the sound of the instruments – i.e. a colour for the bassoon, a different one for the clarinet?

4.     Finally add in the sky, the sun and anything else that might be present on the first day of spring
